This page will present information about the sleep pattern, the psychological differences in the approach to the treatment, the most effective alarms for correcting this problem, and the emotional difficulty the bedwetting issue causes the person who is trying to cope with the problem.

When dealing with the psychological effect on the child, and the emotional damage some methods can cause, we feel the childs welfare is more important than the sale of a program by a company that really does not understand the problem.  ________________________________________________________________________________________

1st. There are very different aproaches from companies who attempt to deal with the problem of bedwetting. Research shows the cause of  bedwetting is a deep sound sleep, and the person who has this type of sleep simply cannot respond to their bladder signals while asleep. It is important to point this out because an improper approach to this problem does cause some emotional issues with young people who suffer with bedwetting.

For example, offering rewards and bribes to the child to try and solve this problem can send the wrong message to the child.  Often parents who innocently use this method do not understand the cause. And, sad to say, some companies will also use rewards to try and correct the bedwetting problem. Any company claiming to correct the bedwetting problem and rewarding the child for having a dry bed, are not qualified professionals in this field.  If they have done their research they would know that a child in deep sleep cannot respond to the bladder signals, so it is not something they can correct, and rewards just send the wrong message to the child. Also, we know bedwetting is something the child would love to stop, but just cannot. When parents offer rewards to the child if they do not wet the bed, this is understandable. They are not the professionals. Even though this sends the message to the child that they can do something about this if they really wanted to. So, rewards, and bribes are offered. Parents who use this method are really trying to help. It's just that they do not understand the real cause, which is the deep sleep. Companies (the ones who refer to themselves as professionals) selling their programs, or their counseling programs to correct this problem, show their lack of professionalism, their lack of training, and their lack of knowledge and research when they use such methods.  Search the web and you will find many, many sites that will call this a sleep disorder problem, then use tools such as "Progress Charts" using signs and symbols to either praise the child for not wetting, or different symbols for wetting. Smiley faces for not wetting, faces with frowns for when a wetting occurs, all send the same message to the child. That message is, "Control this and you will be rewarded".  There are so many web sites where you will read the cause of bedwetting is the deep sleep, but then suggest methods of offering rewards or punitive methods for the child wetting or not wetting.

Medical doctors web pages -

Home treatment kits and programs -

Foundations -

Bedwetting sites selling all kinds of items -

And even some counseling professionals,

all will promote the idea that rewarding the child for not wetting is fine, and not rewarding the child when a wetting occurs is also fine. You may have to read their web sites in some detail to find this false and troubling method, but it is there.  We know these methods will hurt the child emotionally by offering rewards for something they cannot do anything about.

Here are some web sites that come up when the term "bedwetting" is searched. This survey will show how these companies look at the problem of bedwetting. This is what they write on their web sites. This short survery will expose companies who do not understand the cause and cure of this problem.

Research shows, and we know that the deep sleep disorder is tha cause of the bedwetting, and most of these compaies seem to misunderstand this, and some seem to just ignore the research data in an effort to sell their product. Again, the psychological emotional welfare of the child doesn't seem to be considered on many of the bedwetting sites. So read over this short survey, or go to their sites and see for yourself how their approach misses the cause, and actually causes very frustrating and difficult situations for the parent and child.

For the parent, in an effort to save money, please do not ignore the emotional effects that can occur by deciding to follow the false advice of some of these companies, simply because this can do more harm than good. Spending $60 or $70 dollars on some little device will not only prove to be a waste of money, but has actually caused the correction of this problem to be more difficult than doing nothing.

NOTE: Research shows that the equipment used as part of a correction process for correcting bedwetting must be the type equipment that actually is designed to help change the deep sleep. All the little alarms, the type that attaches to the clothing, the beepers, the vibrators, none of these are designed to actually change the deep sleep. They are all designed to sound after the wetting occurs, and maybe alert the parent. However, this does nothing to actually change the deep sleep. The equipment we utilize for this correction process is designed to help change the deep sleep before the wetting occurs, not after. That is a fundamental difference in our correction process with all the other companies who use the little devices that sound when a wetting occurs. This is also why we, when we achieve a correction, offer a two year guarantee against any relapse. None of the other companies offer anything like this. Why? Because the replapse rate from using these little alarms are so high that they cannot guarantee this. Don't settle for less than a proper correction. Don't settle for a program that will end up a failure or a relapse for your child.  ____________________________________________________________________________

COMMENT: This site suggests drug treatment, and the use of a little alarm device. Both ideas show this company does not understand the cause of bedwetting. Many in the medical profession will prescribe drugs to fix this problem. They are persuaded by the drug companies, and the drugs do not correct the problem.

Bedwetting
DryBuddy Wireless Bedwetting
Ideal Practical Helpful IT WORKS!
www.DryBuddy.com
COMMENT: Here is what this company writes about bedwetting and the child.

"Three factors keep the child from waking alone and carrying out hygienic and medical procedures:
(1) The body's natural signals fail to tell the child his or her bladder is full.
(2) They are sleeping too deeply to awaken to a sound, light or vibration.
(3) The child is too sleepy and lacks the motivation to get up and do the needful, falling back to sleep without concern."

COMMENT: Number 1...The signals are being sent during sleep. So number one is false. The child is in too deep sleep to be able to respond.
Number 2...This is correct, they are sleeping too deep to respond, so why would their alarm help?
Number 3...This is completely false, wrong and insensitive. To say the child lacks motivation is saying the child does not care that they wet the bed. That is not true. They cannot help that they wet the bed. And if left alone with the wetting over time the child will seem to lose motivation or concern, however it is the bedwetting that causes this, not the other way around.
Also, this cmpany sells an alarm that actually plugs into a wall outlet for electricity. This is not a safe idea because of the chance of electric surges, or equipment failure.

COMMENT: This company, Pacific International, has done the research, and offers the correct program for correcting this problem. The only problem is their fee ranges from $1500 to $2000.
Here is what they write on their front page.
"Bedwetting (Nocturnal enuresis)
Bedwetting is one of the most confusing, misunderstood problems that a family can face. Ask any ten people why a child or adult wets the bed and you will receive ten different explanations. Research and 59 years of experience has shown that bedwetting is caused by an abnormal, deep, sound sleep. In fact, the World Health Organization states that bedwetting (enuresis) is a sleep related disorder. The enuretic (bedwetter) sleeps so soundly that he or she is unable to respond to bladder pressure when necessary."

COMMENT: Here is what this company writes on their web site about the cause of bedwetting.

"Your doctor will begin by getting a detailed history of your child’s bedwetting, as well as any other symptoms that might be experienced. Depending on the circumstances, a full medical check, including urine analysis and blood tests, may be done to rule out medical conditions such as diabetes or a urinary tract infection. If your doctor suspects a physical abnormality, an X-ray or scan of the kidneys and bladder may be done or you may be referred to an urologist for further testing. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause and the seriousness of the problem.
A number of treatment options are available to help treat bedwetting, including behavioral changes, moisture alarms, drug treatment, psychotherapy, and natural remedies. Pick a treatment option that best suits your child and family."

COMMENT: They do not address the deep sleep at all. They have no concept or trust in the research and case studies that claim the deep sleep is the cause of bedwetting.

COMMENT: Here is what you find on a page of this site where they attempt to explain the cause of bedwetting.

Deep sleep
Small bladder capacity
Irregular defecation
Diet

COMMENT: They do address the deep sleep, but do nothing to correct it. They also mention somethings that are mentioned by so many doctors, the small bladder idea. A small bladder does not cause bedwetting. Neither does diet, of irregular defication. TFD, aor Try For Dry is just that. An attempt to get the child dry, but this is not successful because they do not correct the real problem, the deep sleep.

_____________________________________________________________

When searching for help for the bedwetting problem, trust the research that has been done on this subject. And the research shows the problem or cause of bedwetting is a deep sleep disorder that prohibits the person to respond to the bladder signals while asleep. Always keep this in mind when trying to make a decision on which company to choose, and which direction to go for your child. What can correct deep sleep? What type therapy is needed? What type equipment is necessary? What kind of instructions will solve this problem. Will some little device do this? No! Will some book solve this problem? No! Will prescribed drugs bring a solution? No! How about chiropractic treatments, will they solve bedwetting? No!

The Sleep Disorder Research Center offers a program that really corrects this problem. It may cost more than just purchasing a little alarm device, but it is successful. It does cost more to do a program using the correct methods and all the necessary ingredients for a proper correction. However, this will be a correction that will work for children, teens, and even adults. And this correction will last a lifetime. It is guaranteed.

2nd. Think about this. A child wakes up with a wet bed over and over again. The bedding is wet, they are wet, the odor is there, and they know this is not a good thing. Each morning this child wakes up with a wet bed and feeling like a failure to start out their day. They do not remember wetting. They do not want to do this. They know it causes mother more work. They know their friends do not do this. They sure do not want to be found out by their friends. And if there are siblings, they know they do not do this. They may even hide the wet evidence in an attempt to please mom and dad. Or maybe they hide the evidence in an attempt to be like the other children. They go through the routine of cleaning up the bed and themselves every morning because they have wet the bed during the night. They may have even prayed for this to go away, but it hasn't. Mom and dad have told them not to drink before bed. That did not work. Mom and dad have gotten them up during the night. They do not remember this, but they are told  they were gotten up and they used the toilet. Now they are offered some type reward to stop wetting. They try, but still they wet. Nothing seems to work. They wonder "Why do I wet the bed?" They think this is something a baby does, not someone their age. Maybe they have been taken to the doctor and the doctor has said, "Just wait, they will outgrow this." But still they wet. Is it ever going to go away?  The doctor says it will, but when? And even the doctor tells mom and dad to offer them some type reward. But still the wetting continues. The child does not want to have sleep overs, or go to camp, fearing they other children will find out about their secret.

No matter how parents think this wetting problem does not seem to bother their child, we know it does effect the emotional psychological make up of the child. And the reward method only makes the situation worse. Disposable diapers are bad enough on the child's psychological welfare, but the reward method really does it's damage. Of course there are those who say they don't see how disposable diapers hurt, but the biggest reason for using such things would be the lessoning of the laundry and odor issues. Disposable diapers sure do not help the child overcome this problem. And how does a parent tell the child that they have to wear a baby clothing item without makeing them feel terrible about themselves. And children do have a way of trying to cover up their real feelings about this. They do not want to make mom and dad feel worse about them, so they act as if everything is normal. And when the reward has not been earned, they learn to play it down as much as they can.

3rd. Then parents trying to help, place their trust in a company who will incorporate the reward system in their program as a proper method of treating the problem. Believing the company knows what is best for their child, they purchase their kit or program, and begin to use a method that will effect and bring down the self-esteem and self-worth of the child as they fail to achieve goal of not wetting. Why would a doctor, or a company who claims to know how to correct bedwetting, why would they use such methods? The answer may not be pleasing, but the reason has to be the sale of their product is more important than the emotional welfare of the child. Spending the money, investing in doing the research to produce a proper correction program, just is not necessary. They have heard from some other organization that this method will work, so they use it.   Parents meaning well will spend money on alarms and some programs that incorporate methods in their instructions that actually cause emotional and psychological damage to the child.

4th. Nearly all companies utilize some type of little alarm that attaches somehow to the child's clothing. Even the wrieless alarms have the little sensor in the child's underwear. There are a couple companies who have doen the research and have been correcting the bedwetting problem for decades, that know these little devices do not correct the deep sleep problem, and therefore do not really correct the bedwetting problem on a permanent basis. However, these companies using these inexpensive little alarms keep selling thier products, even though their relpase rate is very high. We know the equipment is a necessary part of the correction, but the sleep must be changed to get the dry bed. And the equipment we use is specifically designed to change the sleep from the beginning of the correction process. Companies using the little alarms speak out against our bell andpad system saying ours is not as sensitive as theirs. That is not true. They mention the little alarm is much more convenient than the large bell and pad system. That is true, but convenience is not the important thing, a good and permanent correction is the goal. These little devices cost so much less than the equipment we use, yet they still charge the same amount as our program using equipment specifically designed to correct the deep sleep, and is more expensive to manufacture.

Sleep Disorder Research Center does not and will not use methods that will hurt the child. And the result of our program will be a higher self-esteem and self-worth, an end to the emotional turmoil in the child's life, and parents who are satisfied they actually did the very best for their child.

Below you can read about the sleep pattern of the child who wets, and the pattern of the normal sleeper who is able to respond to their bladder signals during sleep.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

These different sleep study graphs illustrate the sleeping pattern of a normal sleeper, verses the sleeping pattern of a deep sleeper.

In this graph you can look at the blue line which represents the normal sleeping pattern, how it goes down slowly through the sleep stages. Finally this person gets into deep sleep, and stays there about 20 minutes. If the bladder begins to fill and send signals, and this person is not in deep sleep, this person will be able to respond by holding, or getting up to use the restroom. If the signals begin to be sent and this person is in deep sleep, it will not be very long before they come up out of deep and will be able to respond to the signals. So the normal sleeper can respond to the bladder signals by holding or getting up.

However, notice the blue line, how it represents the deep sleeper. When the deep sleeper goes to sleep, they will dive down into deep sleep very rapidly, and they will stay there for very long periods of time. Now when the bladder begins to send signals this person cannot respond because they are in deep sleep, and because they are staying in deep sleep for a very long time, they empty themselves without even knowing it has happened. A sleep study was conducted for nearly 3 years at the McGill University's Neurological Department, in Montreal several years ago. Their study resulted in these findings that are represented on this sleep graph.

There many sleep studies that can be found at most local libraries. These studies produced basically the same results which show the normal sleeper in these graphs. As you can see, the deep sleeper just cannot penetrate to consciousness to awake and use the restroom before they empty themselves.

Dr. Tom & Maggie Goupil have been researching this problem for over 25 years. They have been developing and producing a program that will correct this problem by correcting the real source of the problem, the deep sleep. The family counseling experience of over 30 years also serves to help families when they come up against a difficult problem or situation while the correction process is taking place. All this is done in the privacy of the home.
